Curing Agents

QR Polymers provide curing agents for epoxy resins, mainly for applications at room temperature. These are as varied as ambient curing paints for metal or for concrete (industrial anticorrosion paints, marine anticorrosive primers, pipe coatings or tank linings), civil engineering applications such as self-levelling or trowellable floorings, mortars, concrete repair, concrete modification, tank laminating, or adhesives for tiles or concrete.

Our curing agents are of various types: unmodified and modified aliphatic or cycloaliphatic amines, epoxy/(cyclo)aliphatic amine adducts, poly(amino)amides and their adducts, Mannich bases and various special curing agents, including waterbornes.

Waterborne products

Today, the civil engineering and coatings industries are without any doubt convinced of the advantages of using waterborne epoxy systems: these systems are environment‑friendly, they offer enhanced work comfort (less smell) and reduced toxicity for the applicators working in closed areas. They are not flammable, they allow for easy cleaning of the application tools with water. These systems also do exhibit excellent adhesion on concrete and on humid surfaces, and they can even be used on wet concrete.

However, formulators are still reluctant to switch to waterborne epoxy binders because they still encounter problems using those:

waterborne systems tend to cure slowly; their application thickness is often limited; the final gloss of cured coatings is also known to be poor, because of an imperfect film formation process. Finally, the protective efficiency of aqueous epoxy formulations, in particular on metal, is regularly questioned and does not always attain the performances achieved by their non-aqueous counterparts.

Salicylic acid-free curing agents

Salicylic acid-free curing agents

Salicylic acid is an efficient catalyst of the epoxy-amine reaction. It has therefore been used for half a century as an accelerator in the formulation of amine-based hardeners for epoxy resins.

However, the classification of salicylic acid as a CMR (carcinogenic/mutagenic/reprotoxic) substance has caused its use in formulated products to be re-assessed. Since May 1st 2020, the use of salicylic acid in formulated products is considered safe up to 3% m/m; above that concentration limit, the product should be treated as a CMR and should be classified and labelled accordingly.

In view of this situation, in QR Polymers we have decided to reformulate some of our epoxy curing agents typically used in the construction sector and make them completely free of salicylic acid. Our new amine adducts Q-RIT 315, Q-RIT 317 and Q-RIT 318 contain 0% salicylic acid. Not only are they compliant with the latest regulations, they also respond to our customers’ continuous search for more friendly products for now and for the future.

Lately we added Q-RIT 381 to our hardeners range. It does not contain any salicylic acid nor any VOC. This product allows faster cure and provides superior chemical resistance to epoxy floorings or paints.

Low VOC curing agents

Low VOC curing agents

Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs are organic chemicals having a low boiling point/high vapour pressure at room temperature. Most classical solvents widely used in the coatings, inks, varnishes and adhesives industries are VOCs. They are easily released in the atmosphere during process or from the finished products and they form air pollutants having detrimental effects on human health and on the environment. As a consequence, there is an increasing tendency to try to reduce VOCs and substitute them, whenever possible.

In Europe, various regulations have been put in place to control the use of VOCs. European Paints Directive 2004/42/EC on the limitation of emissions of VOCs due to the use of organic solvents in decorative paints and varnishes used in buildings and vehicle refinishing products sets maximum total VOC contents in the ready-to-use products.

In this directive, a VOC is defined as being "any organic compound having an initial boiling point less than or equal to 250°C measured at a standard pressure of 101,3 kPa". This means that, next to the classical solvents used in solventborne epoxy applications, some traditional diluents used in solventfree systems are also considered a VOC.

Curing agents used for civil engineering applications very often employ benzyl alcohol. Benzyl alcohol has, however, a boiling point of 204 °C and therefore classifies as VOC. In QR Polymers, we devote much effort in developing suitable alternatives.

One of the products recently introduced and met with much appreciation on the market is our amine adduct hardener RD-0190. This benzyl alcohol-free curing agent shows huge potential in replacing a conventional amine adduct when 0 VOC is required.

Another recent development is Q-RIT 381, a 0 VOC salicylic acid-free curing agent. This product allows faster cure and provides superior chemical resistance to epoxy floorings or paints.

BLUE FIN for surfboards

BLUE FIN for surfboards

Blue FinBLUE FIN systems have been specifically developed for the production of EPS core epoxy surfboards. They are fast curing, low viscosity, water white and hard wearing when cured. Both the BLUE FIN 20 and BLUE FIN 25 systems have accredited minimum biocarbon contents and comply with the requirements of Sustainable Surf .

 

There are two BLUE FIN systems, BLUE FIN 20 and BLUE FIN 25. The BLUE FIN 20 system has a guaranteed minimum biocarbon content of 20% when cured. Surfboards produced using the BLUE FIN 20 or BLUE FIN 25 system automatically qualify to carry the Sustainable Surf ECOBOARD LEVEL ONE label.

The BLUE FIN 25 system has a guaranteed minimum 25% biocarbon content when cured. It is certified by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the material is labelled as such. Surfboards produced using BLUE FIN 25, which also comply with minimum plant based or recycled content in the core, qualify to carry the Sustainable Surf ECOBOARD GOLD LEVEL label.

Both BLUE FIN 20 and 25 are two component systems, with a 2:1 by volume mix ratio with the hardener. There are two hardeners with different reactivities (fast and regular) which can be mixed in any proportion to tune the reactivity to the customers’ requirement. BLUE FIN FAST is commonly used alone unless ambient temperature is above 30°C. The minimum biocarbon content for both BLUE FIN 20 and 25 systems is unaffected by the choice of fast or regular cure speed hardener.

Waterborne zinc rich primers

Waterborne zinc rich primers

There is increasing interest globally for water-based industrial paints. Water-based zinc rich primers are difficult to prepare due to the reactivity of zinc powder with water, evolving hydrogen gas. As a result, solvent-based materials are still widely used. QR Polymers has developed an innovative concept of a water-free water-based hardener: RD-0205WH which has been specifically developed for this application. The zinc is dispersed in the hardener which contains no water and is mixed with the water-based resin component containing other fillers and additives with additional water to the desired solids content before application. Dispersions of zinc powder in RD-0205WH are stable to settling and do not produce gas on prolonged storage even at elevated temperatures.

RD-0205WH is an isolated amine adduct supplied as 70% solids in propylene glycol n-butyl ether. RD-0205WH is miscible with water and is designed for use with modified or non-modified standard liquid epoxy as well as with liquid resin emulsions and solid resin dispersions (such as E‑Pos 1011W55). RD-0205WH has an easy 1:1 recommended mix ratio with standard liquid epoxy resin (EEW 190 g/eq).

An additional benefit of RD-0205WH is its inherent pseudoplastic nature, increasing the stability and resistance to settling of zinc rich paints with the zinc dispersed into RD‑0205WH without water. Water and the resin component are added immediately prior to application.

RD-0205WH exhibits high reactivity at ambient temperature and forms excellent films when cured with solid or liquid epoxy resins.

RD-0205WH requires no ADR labelling.

  • 2015年2月1日国家对VOC含量超过420克/升(含)的涂料征收4%消费税政策。
  • 国务院办公厅发布《贯彻实施质量发展纲要2016年行动计划》,明确提出开展含挥发性有机物涂料质量标准提升行动。
  • 2016年3月2日国家发改委和商务部正式发布《市场准入负面清单草案(试点版)》,涉及多个涂料板块被禁限的产品项目。

 

在禁止溶剂型涂料使用的同时,国家今年密集出台各类政策鼓励和推广应用水性环保涂料:
